02:27 am - Quote of the Month After winning NBC Last Comic Standing in 2003, Comedian Dat Phan said:
"To pursue your dream? That is a little nuts. That is a little crazy. You're gonna have to be a little crazy to REALLY sacrifice EVERYTHING to get what you want.
And, uh, if you consider that crazy...yeah, I believe that if you think that me giving everything I've got to pursue my dreams is crazy...call me crazy.
But I love it."

04:55 pm - There is something terribly immoral about Sims From the Sims' Tips & Tricks:
"Need to get rid of an extra Sim or two? Build a small pool (3x3) with a ladder. Have the extra Sims get into the pool and then remove the ladder. As soon as the Sims run out of energy they will drown. As an added bonus, the resulting tombstones can be sold for $5 each." Current Mood: shocked

07:18 pm - Rumination from watching Jon Stewart After watching about, say, an hour of Jon Stewart-related clips on youtube.com (great site btw), I have learned an essential life lesson about the human intellect.
The only thing we know is that we don't know.
There you have it. I'm telling you, television (or television via internet) offers some good wholesome philosophy to contemplate. Current Mood: contemplative Current Music: Daily Show theme song

11:03 pm - I was watching the UCD Channel, and...
I saw Rigoberta Menchu, the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, speak at Mondavi, on "Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples." What an amazing woman! Full of spirit and dignity and a conscience of humanity.
She was so amazing that I actually got a piece of paper and a pen and took notes. hah!
Apparently, there were massacres in Guatemala; her parents and brother were tortured, burned, and thrown into mass graves. She worked and continues to work on exhuming these graves so that the dead can be properly laid to rest and the living can, for the lack of a better word, relax. She said (paraphrased) that people would ask her, "Why don't you forget what happened and move on?" and she would answer, "It's not a matter of my happiness. It's a matter of whether my brother is important to me or not. Because he is so important to me, I need to give him a dignified burial. I hope that we never forget what happened, and that we'll elect a president who will remember what happened."
She admitted that her work is "doloroso," painful. But she uses this pain to do good for others. She ended saying (in Spanish) "The problems are so enormous. And the data and statistics keep building up. But the challenge is to find solutions. That is why we all need to have a social mission."
Indeed. Like Ghandi said, we need to be the change that we wish to see in the world. How can you change? Current Mood: contemplative

02:21 pm I know this entry is puzzling, but it's for my own mental satisfaction. So don't fret. As a farmer in Welcome to Dongmakgol (a prize Korean movie this year) said, "Don't place my words too deeply in your heart."
To the HUB: If it's too hot for you, then don't touch it. If you really want to do it, however, get a metal poker. Equip yourself. Or find a way to cool it down. But don't blow the problem up and burn yourself in the process. Don't make the matter worse for everyone!
And HAPPY BIRTHDAY TANVIR. It's also my Dad's birthday this week. :D Current Mood: busy

07:30 pm COMMUNITY KWANZAA CELEBRATION THIS FRIDAY Blacks for Effective Community Action (BECA) invites all Davis families and community members to celebrate Kwanzaa at a free event Friday, December 30th from 7-9pm at the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation at the corner of Russell and Arthur, just west of Highway 113. Bring a dessert to share if you can.
Kwanzaa highlights the African American tradition of community connectedness and cultural pride, with seven principles, usually celebrated one each over seven nights from December 26th through January 1st. Through dance, song, and story, Friday's event will illustrate each of these seven principles. Included are Tuskegee Airman and UCDavis Emeritus Professor of Geology Robert Matthews, sharing about the Kwanzaa principle, Kujichagulia (Self-Determination). Dr. Cedric Edwards, the first U.S. citizen to graduate from Cuba's Latin American School of Medicine, will share about the Kwanzaa principle of Nia (Purpose). Dr. Edwards will tell young people how he has not been deterred from his goal of practicing medicine in this country, despite he and his family having lost their home and most of their belongings and his textbooks in Hurricane Katrina.
Contact Jann Murray-Garcia at jmurgar@comcast.net or 753-7443 for questions. Maybe you'll see me there!!

09:23 pm - Thanksgiving Banquet in the evening DKC held a Thanksgiving Banquet at the DHS MPR. There were much more people this year! The dinner was DELISH, as always. It was a Korean/American combo...turkey and kimchee sitting next to each other like it's no thing. And that's the way I felt the whole night. We have a great range of culture at DKC. We have the old OLD Korean grandparents, set in their ways and traditions. And we have the teens (teenyboppers!!) dancing hip-hop to freaky music. We have the Korean Ministry UCD students with their own way of telling jokes and being social...I still don't really understand the humor (It's probably cuz my Korean vocabulary is embarrassingly limited). We have the Americanized, fluently English-speaking UCD students doing beautiful body worship. It's a wonder that we stick together, that we're so TIGHT. And that's what God's love is. Human glue. In Memory of Rosa Parks, who died this evening at age 92.
Quote: Speaking in 1992, Mrs. Parks said history too often maintains "that my feet were hurting and I didn't know why I refused to stand up when they told me. But the real reason of my not standing up was I felt that I had a right to be treated as any other passenger. We had endured that kind of treatment for too long." Current Mood: busy

01:04 pm Today in 1002, Leif Erikson landed on North America.
And three days, 490 years later, with the assistance of 3 ships, sailing technology (like the compass), and 87 experienced seamen, Columbus lands on Cuba and other Caribbean islands.
Hmm...Why do we celebrate Columbus Day? Hey, I'd like the day off from school, like East Coast people do, but I still wonder why we celebrate this guy's "achievement"...He planted colonies in the Dominican Republic and traveled to Cuba, Jamaica, and Nicaragua, among others. He took up some slaves from these islands, called them Indians, and got filthy rich and died at the healthy age of 55. What did this guy DO for the development of the US? Seriously!
